I missed the first Transformers flick on the big screen, but even on home theatre it was quite impressive. Their second offering however, Revenge of the Fallen, seems to have gone the way of many sequels. It’s a big scale film and a CGI masterpiece. But for me, pretty early on it lost its way. Was there a plot? Somewhere in there, yes.
Lurking behind the numerous (and pretty well done) action sequences. Skulking like a moody teenager in the background and not really saying much. And at times I laughed and other times, yep, there was some narrative movement to get caught up in. But as the film progressed the floor of the editing room in my mind got covered with shiny celluloid clippings. Drawn out, overly complicated redundant scenes. And some shockingly bad scripting.
And was it just me, or did this film seem to draw on a bunch of other sci-fi action movies of recent times. Like the Matrix (Sam’s death-revival), Species (Sam seduced by alien chick with deadly tentacle), Star Wars and maybe Star Trek. Then again, it’s generally a question of which new sci-fi flicks manage not to borrow from successful predecessors.
It’s a film for young fans (though I was there with one who wasn’t overly impressed) and from what I’ve read it broke some box office records.
Let’s end of a positive note: visually impressive.
